In the summer of 2026 I had the honor of interning at DISPEL Institute, a private ceramics studio in Cleveland, Ohio that specializes in monumental sculptures and hybrid gas/wood firings. Through this opportunity I was able to get hands-on experience as a builder and assistant to the intricate process of ceramic design at such a unique space.
EGGS
The first project that I contributed to was a collection of egg forms, made with techniques such as hand-building, coiling, slump molding and wheel throwing. We created around 50 enclosed orbs, from paper weights to garden sculptures. These forms were created to invite play from every angle.
SHIELDS
The next project I worked on was the most rewarding build I have made yet. On a team of four we were able to form two life-size sculptures in less than two weeks. The function of these sculptures extended beyond the finished stage. Intentionally placing cylindrical supports with airflow, these towering pieces functioned as barriers between larger work and the harsh flames from the kiln. Made from a custom clay body, thick slabs and precise dimensions, nothing was accidental and everything was made to last and impress.
REFERENCES
Below are the first concepts drawn for the build. The prints on the left are the references that we used throughout the build. Cutting, folding and outlining to visualize and make the form come to life from flat to multi-dimensional and grandiose.
KILN LOADING
Intentionality and precision carried on to other phases of the process, such as firing. Builds at this scale meant that loading days were equipped with forklifts and heavy machinery.
